This 2024 BMW iX M60 rolled into our shop in Austin wearing red paint, and the owner wanted it gone. Not repainted, not vinyl wrapped, but changed with a film that would also protect the car. The answer was PURE PPF Black Matte, a color change paint protection film, installed across the painted body.
The result is what you see here. The iX now reads as a deep, uniform matte black that suits its bold design, and every panel underneath is protected from rock chips, scratches and daily wear on Austin roads.

Why color change PPF instead of vinyl
A vinyl wrap changes the color, but it does little to protect the paint. Color change PPF is built on paint protection film, so the car gets a new look and real protection against chips and scratches in one install.
It is also a reversible change. The factory red is still under the film, so the owner can go back to the original paint later, which matters on a car like the iX M60.

Panel by panel
The iX has large, smooth panels, and a matte finish shows every flaw. Each panel is cleaned and decontaminated first, then the film goes on one section at a time so the texture stays even from the hood to the fenders.
This shot shows the hood and front fender mid-install: matte black on one side, the original red still visible on the other.

Hand-finished edges
The details are what make a color change look factory. Our installers trim and tuck the film around the bumper openings, sensors and body lines by hand, so no red shows at the edges once the car is finished.

The mirror caps: before
Mirror caps are one of the hardest parts of any wrap, with tight curves and a lot of stretch. Here is the iX M60 mirror in its original red before we started.

The mirror caps: after
Same mirror, wrapped in PURE PPF Black Matte. The film follows the curve without lifting or distortion, and the matte texture matches the rest of the body.

Door edges and jambs
Open the door of a poorly done color change and the old paint gives it away. We work the film around the door edges so the change holds up up close, not just from a distance.

How to care for a matte PPF finish
Wash the car by hand with a pH neutral soap and a soft mitt, and dry it with a clean microfiber towel. Avoid waxes, polishes and products that add gloss, since they can leave shiny spots on a matte finish.
Bird droppings, bugs and tree sap should be cleaned off as soon as possible. If you want easier maintenance, a ceramic coating made for matte finishes adds an extra layer that helps the film stay clean.

The finished BMW iX M60
Red to matte black, with the factory paint protected underneath. The iX M60 left our shop with a completely new personality and a finish that is easy to live with every day.
